Ever since I started working, I remember changing positions after 1.5 to 2 years. Because I want to learn more, or because I feel I can do everything the job offers and I don't want to repeat myself.

Fortunately, this is not always accompanied by a change of employer. I have changed positions several times within the same company. From Social Media Manager to Online Advisor, and within Appical from Implementation Consultant to Customer Success Manager.

What is crossboarding?

At Appical, we call this internal switch crossboarding. Of course, this happens to more people than just to me. Crossboardees also deserve a good onboarding into their new jobs. And luckily there are some advantages: this group already knows the organization and the people. So the priority for them is to be onboarded in a more functional way.

But what if you grow into the role of a manager? This is indeed a special group within crossboarding. Being a manager, most of the times, includes other responsibilities than a senior role. So crossboarding for this group is often even more extensive than for employees who change roles within the team or between teams.

4 tips to keep in mind:

1. Crossboardees already know most of the organization, products and history, so less emphasis is usually needed here (with exceptions).

2. When moving to another country or business area, it is wise to go through the local onboarding.

3. At the job level, I personally would go through the whole onboarding: what systems will you be dealing with, what are the processes you need to follow? What KPIs do you have?

4. And with managers: what is expected from the upper management? How do you report? How do you deal with your team, motivation, and sick calls? How do you combine the strengths and weaknesses of your team members? And what skills are needed? More extensive training is no luxury here.

Have you ever switched jobs internally? And how did you experience this?
